Creating Consistent Art Styles

Use style references, color palettes, and prompt patterns to maintain visual consistency across your game project.

Overview

Visual consistency is what separates a cohesive game from a collection of unrelated sprites. When characters, objects, and environments share a common palette, line weight, and shading style, the game world feels intentional.

spritesynth provides three levers for consistency: style reference images, shared color palettes, and repeatable prompt patterns. Use all three together for best results.

Step 1: Create a Style Reference Character

Generate your first character as the art style benchmark:

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/characters \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
"prompt": "pixel art knight, blue armor, gold trim, idle stance, 16-bit style",
    "direction_count": 4,
    "width": 32,
    "height": 32
  }'

Once you're happy with the result, save it as your style anchor.

Step 2: Use Style Reference for Subsequent Generations

Generate all future assets using the reference image to maintain the same aesthetic:

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/generations/style \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
"prompt": "pixel art wooden shield, blue crest, gold trim",
    "style_reference": "base64_encoded_reference_image",
    "width": 32,
    "height": 32
  }'

Step 3: Reuse Prompt Patterns

Maintain a consistent prompt template across all generations:

pixel art [subject], [description], [color palette reference], [style modifier], transparent background

For example: pixel art forest tree, green canopy, brown trunk, blue accent leaves, 16-bit style, transparent background

Tips

  • One reference to rule them all — Generate a single reference character, then use it for all characters in the same project.
  • Lock the palette — Extract a palette from your reference and apply it as a constraint in the editor.
  • Document your prompts — Save successful prompts as templates for reuse across sessions.
