MCP Installation

Step-by-step guide to installing and configuring the SpriteSynth MCP server for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf.

MCP Installation

Get the SpriteSynth MCP server running in your AI assistant in minutes.

Prerequisites

Claude Desktop

Step 1: Get Your API Key

  1. Go to spritesynth.com/account/api-keys
  2. Click Create API Key
  3. Name it (e.g., "Claude Desktop")
  4. Copy the full key — it's shown only once

Step 2: Add MCP Server

Open Claude Desktop and navigate to Settings > Developer > Edit Config. This opens claude_desktop_config.json.

Add the spritesynth server:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "spritesynth": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@spritesynth/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "SPRITESYNTH_API_KEY": "sk_live_xxx"
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace sk_live_xxx with your actual API key.

Step 3: Restart Claude Desktop

Quit Claude Desktop completely and reopen it.

Step 4: Verify

Start a new conversation and ask Claude to "List my projects". If the MCP server is connected, Claude will retrieve your project list.

Cursor

Step 1: Get Your API Key

Same as above — get your key from spritesynth.com/account/api-keys.

Step 2: Add MCP Server

  1. Open Cursor Settings (Cmd/Ctrl + ,)
  2. Navigate to MCP section
  3. Click Add server
  4. Enter the configuration:
{
  "name": "spritesynth",
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@spritesynth/mcp-server"],
  "env": {
    "SPRITESYNTH_API_KEY": "sk_live_xxx"
  }
}

Step 3: Restart Cursor

Close and reopen Cursor to load the MCP server.

Step 4: Verify

In a Cursor chat, ask: "List my projects". Cursor should connect to the SpriteSynth MCP server and return your projects.

Windsurf

Step 1: Get Your API Key

Get your key from spritesynth.com/account/api-keys.

Step 2: Add MCP Server

  1. Open Windsurf Settings
  2. Navigate to MCP Servers
  3. Add a new server with this configuration:
{
  "name": "spritesynth",
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@spritesynth/mcp-server"],
  "env": {
    "SPRITESYNTH_API_KEY": "sk_live_xxx"
  }
}

Step 3: Restart Windsurf

Close and reopen Windsurf.

Step 4: Verify

In a Windsurf conversation, ask: "List my projects".

Cline (VS Code Extension)

Step 1: Get Your API Key

Get your key from spritesynth.com/account/api-keys.

Step 2: Add MCP Server

  1. Open Cline settings in VS Code
  2. Navigate to MCP Servers
  3. Add a new server:
{
  "name": "spritesynth",
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@spritesynth/mcp-server"],
  "env": {
    "SPRITESYNTH_API_KEY": "sk_live_xxx"
  }
}

Step 3: Reload VS Code

Reload the VS Code window to activate the MCP server.

Global Installation (Optional)

If you prefer to install the MCP server globally instead of using npx:

npm install -g @spritesynth/mcp-server

Then update your config to use the installed command:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "spritesynth": {
      "command": "spritesynth-mcp",
      "env": {
        "SPRITESYNTH_API_KEY": "sk_live_xxx"
      }
    }
  }
}

Troubleshooting

"MCP server not connected"

  • Verify Node.js 18+ is installed: node --version
  • Check the API key is valid
  • Restart your AI assistant after config changes

"Command not found"

  • If using global install, ensure npm global bin is in your PATH
  • Try using npx instead: "command": "npx"

"Unauthorized" errors

  • Double-check your API key starts with sk_live_ or sk_test_
  • Ensure the key hasn't been revoked or expired
