Generating Multi-Directional Characters

Create characters with 1, 4, or 8 directional variants for top-down and isometric games.

Overview

For top-down and isometric games, characters need multiple facing directions. spritesynth can generate full directional sets — front, back, left, right, and diagonals — with consistent style across all variants.

Direction Counts

DirectionsAnglesBest For
1Front onlySide-view games, portraits
4Front, back, left, rightMost top-down RPGs, strategy games
84 cardinal + 4 diagonalDetailed RPGs, isometric games

Step 1: Generate a 4-Direction Character

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/characters \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
"prompt": "pixel art knight, silver armor, red cape",
    "direction_count": 4,
    "width": 32,
    "height": 32,
    "project_id": "your-project-uuid"
  }'

The API returns a character with directional variants attached as states.

Step 2: Add Animation States

Once the base character is created, add states for different actions:

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/characters/{character_id}/states \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "walk",
    "direction": "south",
    "asset_id": "generated_walk_sprite_id",
    "frame_count": 4,
    "frame_width": 32,
    "frame_height": 32,
    "frame_duration_ms": 150
  }'

Step 3: Export the Character

Export as a ZIP containing all directional sprite sheets and a metadata file:

curl -O https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/characters/{character_id}/export-zip \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

The ZIP includes:

  • Sprite sheets per direction (north, south, east, west)
  • metadata.json with frame counts, dimensions, and state definitions
  • Compatible with Unity, Godot, and Aseprite import workflows

Tips

  • Consistent palette — Use the same prompt structure across all directions to maintain color consistency.
  • Start with front-facing — Generate the front view first, then use it as a style reference for other directions.
  • Use the editor — Open the character in the editor to fix alignment issues between directions or add missing frames.
