Top-Down Tileset Design

Create seamless top-down tilesets for RPGs and adventure games — terrain types, auto-tiling, and edge matching.

Overview

Top-down tilesets are the foundation of RPG and strategy game maps. A good tileset provides enough terrain variety to build interesting levels while ensuring every tile edge matches seamlessly with its neighbors. The standard approach is to generate terrain tiles with consistent edge types that auto-tiling algorithms can assemble into larger maps.

Step 1: Generate Base Terrain Tiles

Start with the core terrain types for your biome:

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/generations/tileset \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "description": "grass, dirt, stone path, water, sand tiles for a coastal forest",
    "type": "top_down",
    "tile_size": 16
  }'

Step 2: Add Edge and Transition Tiles

For seamless auto-tiling, generate transition tiles between terrain types. A grass-to-dirt transition needs edge tiles for each direction:

curl -X POST https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/generations/tileset \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "description": "grass to dirt path transition tiles, top, bottom, left, right edges, corners",
    "type": "top_down",
    "tile_size": 16
  }'

The editor's layer system helps align edge tiles by overlaying base terrain and transition layers.

Step 3: Export for Auto-Tiling

Export with Tiled-compatible JSON for use with auto-tiling rules:

curl -X GET https://api.spritesynth.com/v1/tilesets/{tileset_id}/export \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

In Tiled, set up terrain sets that map your tile edges and corners. The JSON export includes tile index references for each terrain type.

Tips

  • 16×16 is standard — 16px tiles work well for most top-down games and pair naturally with 32px tall characters.
  • 4 terrain types max — A tileset with more than 4 terrain types becomes hard to manage. Use separate tilesets for different biomes.
  • Test edges in the editor — Arrange 3x3 tile blocks to verify all edge combinations match before exporting.
